Hudson Valley Love Nests for Love Birds This Valentine’s!

Updated: Jan 24, 2023

February. The month of romance. Why not surprise your honey with a special retreat that is sure to amp up the heat? If you're a travel-loving couple, Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to plan a getaway, and there are so many romantic places across the Hudson Valley to choose from. That's why we've rounded up these romantic stay places to inspire your wanderlust or, if you happen to live a short drive away, to head to on a romantic Valentine's Day's road trip.

These small town hideaways are more than just charming; they're magical (seriously, of them feel like they could have been plucked from a Hallmark movie).

Choose a cozy cabin for two at Antrim Streamside for a very, private (and steamy) country escape in Livingston Manor or a tarted up silver Airstream to cuddle together in the woods at AutoCamp Saugerties.

Fantasy your thang? Pick your pleasure from themed rooms at The Roxbury Motel (pop the question with a Tiffany in the “Golightly-a-Go-Go”; release his inner caveman in “Fred’s Lair”). Or, kick it up with a whole bungalow to boogie through (you know what we mean) at Stratton Falls (give her a lascivious love bite in "Dracula’s Fangs”; treat her like the princess she is under “Cinderella’s Gown”).

The Hudson Valley has so many unique and romantic getaways! Check out HVH’s 10 fave Stay Places for a weekend to remember!

Winner of Trip Advisor’s 2021 “Top 25 Hotels in the U.S.”, imagine if Alice in Wonderland married Willy Wonka and set up residence in Oz. THAT’s what The Roxbury Experience is all about. When you open the door to your room, they want you to feel that immediacy of emotion that seeing a great film or theatrical production can produce. Only instead of just watching the production, imagine the ability to actually be IN the production. To live the fantasy… And what a better time to explore fantasies than during Valentine’s Day season? So whether you’re into vampires or genies or superheroes or fairies or trekkies or goths or cowboys or cave people or movie stars or fairy tales or dragons or castles or aliens or Greek gods or wizards or Indiana Jones (just to name a few), they are likely to have the escape from reality that you didn’t know you were looking for.

The Roxbury Experience is comprised of two locations – The Roxbury at Stratton Falls and The Roxbury Motel. The properties are two miles down the road from each other and have price points varying from $150 - $790/night depending on the type of room, suite, or cottage is selected. Each location is dedicated to whimsical, immersive, fantasy creations and both have spas with hot tubs and saunas available during your stay for an extra $20 per person. Time in the spas is reservable by appointment only to ensure privacy for your group and when you purchase a spa pass it enables you to enjoy the spas at both locations.

Although out of this world, the two hotels are surprisingly nestled in tiny rural Roxbury, a historic hamlet established in 1788 and set in the bucolic Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. Only three hours northwest of New York City, the Roxbury Experience is within close proximity to the four main ski centers of the Catskills: Plattekill Mountain (literally five minutes up the road), Belleayre Ski Center (fifteen minutes away), and Hunter and Windham Mountains (only thirty minutes away). And right on the Stratton Falls property is the 50’ waterfall that gives the site its name. Guests from either location

can walk the nature trail that surrounds the magnificent waterfall with its observation decks, grand staircases, and purposefully-created “instagram moments” scattered about its numerous nooks and crannies. During the winter months the lower half of the trail that takes guests on a journey to the base of the waterfall is closed, but the upper portion of the trail stays open year round.

Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year, take advantage of The Roxbury’s special “stay two midweek nights, get the third for free” promotion. For guests that want to experience different themes during their stay, The Roxbury allows switching rooms each night during your stay, so this year why not give your Valentine an unexpected roomcation fantasy – or two – or three?

The Stewart House is an idyllic waterfront escape with magnificent views of the Hudson River in Athens, NY, a quaint valley town just minutes from Hudson and Catskill and perfect for a romantic upstate getaway. Visit during the month of February and get 15% off room rates, plus a complimentary bottle of Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée champagne and a Catskill Collection six piece box of chocolates from Catskill Chocolate Company. Use the code "HVHLOVE" when booking direct online or over the phone at (518) 947-1587. Please note that onsite dining at 1883 Tavern is closed during the month of February, however there are several other local dining options nearby. Offer valid for stays 2/1/2023 - 2/28/2023. May not be combined with any other offer.

Focused on elevated, authentic style and subtle yet attentive hospitality, the Stewart House is an architectural gem and haven of modern amenities that has anchored a community for generations. The Italianate-style boarding house turned boutique hotel first welcomed guests in 1883 and has been meticulously restored with a fresh perspective, striking a balance between luxury and comfort.

First settled in 1706 and rich in history and natural beauty, much of the original architecture of Athens can still be admired today. Notable residences, storefronts and industrial buildings emerged as local industry thrived in the 19th century with brickyards, ship builders, ice harvesters and potters contributing to the bustling economy. In 1877, Athens was at the height of prosperity, when William and Ida Stewart purchased a plot on Water Street and began work on their new Italianate-style boarding house, first welcoming guests in 1883. Their daughter, Harriet or "Hattie", was raised alongside the growing business, becoming a keen business woman and taking over operations as an adult.

Hattie left behind payroll sheets, the tab log, and hotel reservation lists along with diary entries, postcards, and letters which reveal she was likely more interested in the success of her business than fulfilling a traditional domestic role. She is revered as the earliest suffragette in Athens.

As her successful run came to an end, another young Athens couple took over. Bill & Marion Garbasz ushered in a new era in 1949 when they re-established it as The Athens Hotel, and put it on the map as a dining destination. Locals hold fond memories of the Garbasz days, which ended in 1986.

After more than 100 years in business, the property closed to the public but remained in the spotlight. Movie buffs recognize the building from the 1988 film Ironweed starring Jack Nicolson and Meryl Streep. It can also be spotted in several scenes of Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds in 2005.

The new millennium brought several rounds of ownership changes before the Stewart House landed in the hands of Lon and Lois Ballinger, who were at the helm of iconic Webster Hall in New York's East Village for over thirty years. Lois recalls a love at first sight feeling on their first tour of the Athens property. She knew with the help of local designer Tim Albright, they could meticulously restore it to its full, gorgeous and lively potential. In May of 2018, The Stewart House reopened once again. An Art Deco bar, farm-to-table tavern, and seasonal waterfront grill complement nine elegantly appointed guest rooms.
